Gloria Dei || Belmont, CA

by Emily Mantuefel and Kennedy DeVries, Kingdom Workers Volunteers

The theme at Bible camp in Belmont, California was Camp Discovery. Each day the campers learned new verses that corresponded with the focus of the day. For example, on Monday the take home point was "Discover Jesus, He gives me courage". To emphasize this point the children learned "Be strong and courageous. For the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” Joshua 1:9. Each of the daily verses had sign language to go with it. On the last day of camp, the campers enjoyed leading their group by individually doing the actions of one of the passages. A student demonstrates the actions from one of the passages they learned that week. Then, the other students had the opportunity to raise their hand and recall the reference to the verse (that had just been demonstrated with only sign language).

Another activity the campers enjoyed was leading each other in song. All of the songs had sign language to go with them. At the end of the week the students got in groups and took turns being the leaders of the sign language. Each group stood in front of the church for one song and then led their fellow students in the words and actions. The campers really enjoyed this because they were able to show what they had learned about Christ in their songs.

I was blessed with the opportunity to travel to Belmont, California and help out with Gloria Dei Lutheran Church's Vacation Bible School. In the VBS camp, the theme was "Camp Discovery" and the kids were able to discover the different ways Jesus is at work through us. There were around 50 children ranging from 3-4 year-olds to 9-10 year- olds moving through the different activities in the camp: music, games, storytelling, and snack.

In music, they learned actions and words to songs, such as "Praise God from Whom all Blessings Flow" and the theme song "Camp Discovery", which tells the ways Jesus works through them by praying, helping, serving, and sharing God's Word to others. Also, they were taught the passage of the day with corresponding actions. Meanwhile in storytelling, they heard the Bible story of the day and engaged in thought questions giving them ways to stand up for people while also being a disciple of the Lord and spreading His Word with others by inviting them to church. It was truly inspiring to see all of the kids excited to engage in God's Word every day and sing praises for him. By the end of the week, the kids didn't want to leave and we didn't want them to. Through this camp, you could see the children's faith being strengthened as they were surrounded with the Word of God in all their activities and heard God's message each day. It was such a blessing to have Jesus work through me to share his gospel with others.
