VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Does this Ark look ‘arky’ to you?”

Can we use marshmallows for these angels?”

Vacation Bible School (VBS) is always a time of creativity and fun. Usually designed as an easy way to invite new families to church, and to directly share the gospel with children, VBS is a perennial favorite for many churches. As a Kingdom Workers volunteer, having the right skills and the right gospel motivation are both important.

Vacation Bible Schools typically:

  • • Offer bible-themed activities like songs, crafts, snacks, devotions, and more!
  • • Use a “VBS kit” with a DVD full of songs, sheet music, and craft ideas that form the base for the week’s theme. Example themes: “Passport to the Bible,” (Travel) “Camp Discovery,” (Camping) etc. Some churches forgo kits and create their own themes.
  • • Include decorating areas of the church or fellowship hall to represent a devotion theme or bible story.

As you apply for this opportunity, think about your past experiences with Sunday school, summer camp, or other times you’ve told children about Jesus. There are many roles to play within a VBS team, so whether you’re comfortable organizing snacks, doing follow-up conversations with parents about the Bible stories, or teaching lessons to the wee ones, take stock of your skills, and talk about them with your volunteer team. You can expect Kingdom Workers to introduce you to your teammates and to help start these conversations.

As your team communicates with the congregation, ask the pastor or ministry leader to tell you about the vision for sharing the gospel through this VBS.

Sometimes, a congregation will ask Kingdom Worker volunteers to help canvas before, or follow up in the community after a VBS event. Understanding more about the goals of your specific volunteer opportunity will help you prepare fully, execute faithfully, and encourage others to engage in mission work too! What will you learn that you can take back to your local ministry? Apply today!
