Christmas For Kids :: Malawi

Posted by djaspersen on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, In : FIA

KW Editor's Note: In December, a KW team traveled to Malawi to work with our brothers and sisters in Christ to bring the Christmas message to the children there. One of the members of that team (Anna Hirschfeld) reflects on an insight she had about material gain.

Anna Hirschfeld

In both of the villages we visited, it was very eye-opening to compare what the Malawians have and what I take for granted.  I noticed one example of this when I was teaching the c...

Dec 19, 2014 - Day 3 of VBS in the village of Glasten

Posted by djaspersen on Friday, December 26, 2014, In : FIA

by Mary Lindloff

Today I arrived at the village with mixed feelings; this was our last day of VBS here in Malawi! I was excited to have another opportunity to share God's Word with the children but I was also sad that this was my last day working with these precious children. Also, to be honest, I was a bit tired this morning from all the prep and teaching work we had done over the past two weeks.

That feeling of fatigue suddenly evaporated as we pulled up to the church and t...

Dec 18, 2014 - Day 2 of VBS in the village of Glasten

Posted by djaspersen on Friday, December 26, 2014, In : FIA

by Mary Lindloff

Today we arrived for our second day of VBS in the village of Glasten. I was excited to be able to teach the story of Jesus' birth to so many children!

After I told the story of Jesus' birth, the children had the opportunity to act out the story using masks. The children had chances to be Mary, Joseph, Caesar Augustus, the owner of the inn and the animals in the stable. The children eagerly volunteered to act out the story; their faces lit up with joy when the...

THE TO DO LIST: BECCA REHBERGER

Posted by djaspersen on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, In : FIA

KW Editor Note:  Becca Rehberger served in Toledo, Ohio this summer at Zion Lutheran Church and School.  Her mission was to help them grow in the community and spread God’s Word.

Everybody has a list: things to do, things to buy, people to see. Here in Toledo, Ohio, at Zion Lutheran Church, we have a list as well: a list of people for us to contact. It’s straightforward enough: names, numbers and addresses. They’re entries in a database.

Or are they?

We’ve done a lot of phone canvassing...

Posted by djaspersen on Tuesday, November 25, 2014, In : FIA

KW Editor Note: David Spaude volunteered over the summer and his time was spent in North Hollywood at St. Paul’s First Lutheran Church.  Like many of our other volunteers, a portion of his experience was assisting with Vacation Bible School.

This week at St. Paul’s was VBS. The theme was “A Ticket to Adventure.” Each day’s Bible story took place in a different city. So as we traveled from city to city we learned new songs and new facts about each place. The kids had opportunities to...

The time I spent in Fort Myers was time well spent. Everyone that I met there was inviting and kind. It was very nice getting to know some of the members of Crown of Life. It wasn't just the teachers and staff that were excited about Haley and I working there, some of the members even took us out for sightseeing. Everyone wa...

LABOR IN THE LORD IS NOT IN VAIN: HANNAH HACKBARTH

Posted by djaspersen on Tuesday, November 4, 2014, In : FIA

KW Editor Note: Hannah Hackbarth was sent to Zion Lutheran Church and School in Toledo, Ohio to volunteer over the summer. Her service, as well as the service of many others, is a blessing to both KW and the communities in which they serve.

Much of Becca and my ministry assistance at Zion has involved phone calling. We started with a list of over 300 names of families eligible for the EdChoice program in our area, and we were given the task to whittle it down to only the names of people intere...

KW Editor Note: David Spaude went to North Hollywood this summer as a Kingdom Workers volunteer.  He worked with children at St. Paul’s First Lutheran Church and School.

This week in North Hollywood we broke out the safety goggles and explored the world of science! We did all sorts of experiments such as baking soda and vinegar volcanoes, exploding ziplock bags, slime and even something called elephant toothpaste! We made animal calls to study sound waves and also explored optical illus...

After our flight landed safely, our very first impression was that life in Phoenix would be different; but even though our lifestyles may vary, we are all one in Christ.  We were welcomed into the church Sunday morning as if it was our home church....

Craft Day at VBS in Malawi - Kristin

Posted by djaspersen on Monday, July 28, 2014, In : FIA

It was craft day, but this time I took the under 5s while Jessie taught the older kids. The under 5s craft was just a coloring sheet that matched the story of creation and had the Bible verse on it. We laid out the sheets and put a crayon down for each child before they came to sit down. If we were in the States, the kids would have run in, grabbed the crayons, and started coloring away while chatting with their neighbors. I was so impressed with these Malawian kids, though. They came...

More From Malawi - Andrea

Posted by djaspersen on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, In : FIA

I consider myself an athlete. (Although now I should probably include the word old.)  I took my athletic self on an old wooden roller coaster ride at Mt. Olympus Park in Wisconsin this summer with my family. After I got off, I could have used a chiropractor.

That memory came flooding back to me as we traveled down the narrow dirt road in Africa on the way to our first village church. Our team laughed as we clutched onto anything we could for stability. As our Land Rover powerfully tackled th...

Note from Malawi - Kristin

Posted by djaspersen on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, In : FIA

We had been driving along some dirt roads for a while, seeing our first glimpses of village life.

The houses were made out of bricks, the bricks we saw drying in the sun. They were modest houses, but they looked clean. There were also chickens and goats wandering everywhere, along with adults and children.

Then we turned down this lane I thought was too narrow for a car to drive on. As we got closer to the church, we could hear voices. As soon as we turned into the church, the women's c...

Esther Harbach, Peoria, AZ

Posted by djaspersen on Friday, July 11, 2014, In : FIA

This trip was absolutely amazing and much more incredible that I could have imagined. I can't think of a better way to spend my time than by serving God with friends by my side and people who share my faith. It's amazing that you can travel across the country and feel right at home with people whom you've never met. The host families were phenomenal. It actually emotional to leave today, because they feel like our extended family! Although we were split between 3 homes, we  were able ...
