KW Editor Note: Faith In Action volunteers Allison Songstad and Laura Albrecht served in the VBS program at Deer Valley Lutheran Church in Phoenix this summer. We are thankful for their service as well as the service of all our VBS volunteers.
After our flight landed safely, our very first impression was that life in Phoenix would be different; but even though our lifestyles may vary, we are all one in Christ. We were welcomed into the church Sunday morning as if it was our home church. After the service, we enjoyed visiting during fellowship time and participating in a brief Bible study. The congregation openly invited us to a bowling outing, and even though our bowling skills were not the greatest, it was a great way to get to know the members of the church and build our anticipation for the coming week.
The children flowed in with excitement at the start of VBS at Deer Valley Lutheran. To welcome the children, we sang and danced to our favorite Christian songs. The children were all smiles. They were told they were acting as the Israelites throughout the week as the theme was Wilderness Escape. On the first day they were taught that “God is with us, so trust God!” During our first adventure, we were led by Moses through the Red Sea. The kids also loved the opportunity to make crafts and play games. The crafts were used to decorate each of the “tribes’” tents, and the kids left looking forward to the rest of the week. It is such a blessing to see the Holy Spirit working within these children as they grow in their faith. We are very fortunate to have the ability to assist and encourage them during their journey at Vacation Bible School and excited to see what the rest of the week has in store for all of us!
