Volunteer Management

Laura grew up on a farm in southern Minnesota and loved the experience of attending a one-room Lutheran elementary school. She studied at Bethany Lutheran College and Minnesota State University, Mankato where she graduated with a degree in K-12 Vocal Music Education. Laura is also certified to teach English as a Second Language and recently became certified in volunteer administration (CVA). During her nine years of public school teaching, she taught vocal music, instrumental music, and ESL in Minnesota, China, Nebraska and Vietnam from kindergarten to university level. She is married to Eric Harstad, who is a vocal music teacher. Both of their families treasure the Lutheran music tradition, and family gatherings frequently include singing hymns together.

Laura has also been active in church as an organist, choir director and president of the Women’s Circle. Other volunteer activities include leading an online women’s Bible study, teaching English at a community center and serving as a founding committee member for Move In Mission (

Laura has traveled to China, Vietnam, Chile, Malawi, Mexico, France, Germany, Thailand, Canada as well as numerous locations throughout the USA. She loves meeting brothers and sisters in Christ around the world and finding ways to connect them for support and encouragement.

Laura has been working for Kingdom Workers since 2012, but she first volunteered for Kingdom Workers while in college. That initial trip led to KW mission trips around the world and to her current job at Kingdom Workers. She began as an International Volunteer Coordinator and is now the Director of Volunteer Management. Laura is passionate about utilizing the gifts of volunteers in outreach – whether it’s in the church, community, or globally. She is also an advocate for building cultural awareness to more effectively share the gospel message.

About me

It’s rare to find me without... a new idea or question

To get to know me you’d have to... enjoy having a deep discussion – preferably over coffee

When I was five years old I wanted to be... a veterinarian

Another Ministry/NPO I love is... Christian Life Resources:

When I’m not “Working Together to Share the Gospel”, I am... spending time with family, learning about what is happening in the world, listening to music.

The book on my nightstand is... a Bible

My favorite potluck food is... too many to decide – it’s all homemade!

The moment I knew I wanted to work for Kingdom Workers was... when I had offered to volunteer, and they offered me a job instead! I never dreamed I would be working for an organization like Kingdom Workers, and I am so thankful to be part of sending people to share the gospel around the world.
